Camp Bimini has operated 78 years in Perth South community. Our season opens in May and continues to October with school outdoor education programs, youth groups retreats, overnight camp, and leadership training. July and August are busy with our youth camping season with over eleven hundred children, youth and young adults attending. Combining all campers, staff members, school groups, youth groups, service organizations, church groups and private rentals, 3500 to 4000 people visit our site from May to October. Our mission is to be welcoming and inclusive. To value all individuals for who they are. Our property and facilities need to reflect our mission. An existing gender specific washroom building needs an update. New fixtures and plumbing are required. Plywood stalls and painted cement block are difficult to clean, appearing unsanitary. Often line ups occur on one side and empty spots on the other gender side. Our plan is to renovate the building to a gender-neutral inclusive facility.Remove urinals and replace with toilet stalls. New smooth surface metal stalls with floor to ceiling walls for privacy will be easier to clean. The showers will have an adjacent enclosed private space to undress, dry, and redress ensuring privacy. Sinks will become single trough basin with more space more multiple users decreasing congestion and waiting. Monitoring counsellors could supervise campers of all genders and identities. A parent, worker or guardian can accompany a child/client of another gender. Some individuals may be hesitant to enter a specific gender washroom; an inclusive facility would be a solution. Gender neutral signage and education will encourage an inclusive, respectful camp community. For more information please check out our website www.campbimini.ca
