About Murano Glass

Murano glass is renowned for its intricacy. Originating from the island of Murano in the Venetian lagoon in Italy it has been produced since the 13th century.

The glass is made by melting a mixture of silica, soda, lime and other minerals in a furnace at very high temperatures. Once the glass has reached the proper consistency it is shaped and moulded using various techniques including blowing, cutting and engraving.

It can be made in a wide range of colours from blues and greens to bright yellows and oranges. Many pieces have intricate floral motifs or delicate animal shapes.
