Walker's is pleased to present another auction of Inuit and First Nations art, Wednesday, November 22, 2017 in Ottawa. We are proud to bring to our clients another outstanding selection of works from dozens of collections across Canada and the U.S.We are happy to offer another treasure trove of masterpieces from several important American collections: the Albrecht Collection in Scottsdale, the Sam Wagonfeld Collection in Denver, and the Joshua Pruzansky Collection in New York. We are also pleased to offer for the first time important works from the Daniel and Jackie Snajdman Collection in Hamilton, Ontario. As always, we are grateful to all of our consignors who have entrusted their treasures to us.Among the many exceptional Inuit sculptures on offer this fall we would like to highlight some key pieces: an impressive and stunning Dancing Bear by the great Pauta Saila; an important Davidialuk Alasua Amittu legend sculpture; Two Figures, a masterpiece by John Pangnark; the gorgeous Head by Karoo Ashevak; the spectacular Mother Holding a Sleeping Child and the lovely Caribou by Osuitok Ipeelee; and a superb unidentified Inukjuak Mother and Child from c. 1953-54. In addition there are outstanding sculptures by Andy Miki, George Tatanniq, Judas Ullulaq, Kiugak Ashoona, Henry Evaluardjuk, John Kavik, Lucy Tasseor, Kiakshuk, Latcholassie Akesuk, Mathew Aqigaaq and many others. Also included are several great sculptures by Barnabus Arnasungaaq, who sadly passed away this year. The sculptural arts also offer a number of outstanding prehistoric and Historic Period works from Alaska, Canada and Greenland.In the graphic arts we are pleased to offer an especially large selection of outstanding original drawings. They include beautiful and rare works by Niviaqsi, Kenojuak Ashevak, Jessie Oonark, Parr, Luke Anguhadluq, John Kavik, Kiakshuk, Janet Kigusiuq and many others. We are also offering an exceptional group of textile hangings and clothing this season. They include a highly important 1970 untitled hanging by Jessie Oonark as well as lovely works by other Baker Lake textile artists; a rare 1930s beaded hanging; a 1950 bird skin hanging; and three amazing parkas, each one rare and unusual in its own way.One of the cornerstones of this season's auction is a selection of paintings by Norval Morrisseau. Of special mention is his rare and compelling Sacred Beaver on birchbark, but the collection also includes important works on paper and canvas from the mid 1960s, 1974 and 1989. Other First Nations art highlights include a beautiful canvas by Daphne Odjig and lovely 19th century argillite sculptures.As always we at Walker's are grateful for the support of our growing list of consigning and buying clients.
